Round container with peony scrolls

This small round container is decorated with a peony scroll design in gold and silver powder that floats against the black lacquer background. This decorating technique of sprinkling metallic powder over a wet lacquered surface (makie) is unique to Japan and can be traced back to at least the late eighth century.
