The images comprising Photographic Memories are memories not just in that they were taken primarily in the nineteenth century—the idea of memories is more personal than that. These pictures reflect lives people led in Asia or trips they took there—or would like to have taken. Many such pictures were brought home not just as mementos of grand adventures but as enticements to new travelers.
