This large box with a peony design was used to store robes—most likely wedding costumes or official robes. Korean robes in that era were folded and stored individually in boxes. Certain properties of lacquer repel insects and control humidity; thus, lacquer boxes were ideal choices for storing garments. Separate lacquer boxes were used to store hats, belts, and shoes.
